Exporting fossils

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (1.4 MB) recorded in the Pilbara in 2005. Martin Van Kranendonk, of the Geolological Survey of Western Australia, talks to Rose Grymes, of the NASA Astrobiology Institute, about the procedures for exporting fossils.

(looking at stromatolite) Tremendous!

Can we put it in the NAI display case?

Yeah, yeah, go ahead.

It’s lovely. You can see a little bit of fine rippling or fine layering there, and all through here and then you get these beautiful shapes, these beautiful pink shapes.

And do you need a certificate to pack it and mail it?

Yeah, you do actually. There’s a customs constraint on taking fossilised material out of the country and we have to write you a letter of clearance and that sort of thing.
