Archaean Earth

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (2.7 MB) recorded in the Pilbara in 2005. Abby Allwood, from the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, describes an Archaean Earth.

The Pilbara is certainly worlds apart from everyday life. The more I think about the Archaean earth, there are virtually no analogues for much of what we see in the rocks. We have to abandon all the stuff that you learn as an undergraduate geologist in order to just get to basic principles and look at some of the weird stuff you see in these Archaean rocks. It's just completely different and you have to get to first principles to understand it and, yes, it was basically like another planet. You wouldn’t recognise it if you went and stood on it and expected to see something like the earth we have today.
