Significance of ripple marks

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (2.0 MB) recorded at Shark Bay in 2005. Adrian Brown, from the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, discusses the significance of ripple marks.

Transcript:

You see really get good ripple marks here too. So if this place was encased in sand, we'd get the stromatolites trapped, we'd get the pustular mats trapped. We’d also get them trapped right next to these ripple marks here. Those are all the sort of clues that we could look for as geologists trying to find out what sort of environment these stromatolites were laid down in. If we are getting ripples then we know that we must be somewhere where the waves are affecting the sands laid down. So it must be pretty shallow water, not a deep ocean.
