Sampling pustular mat

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (12.1 MB) recorded at Shark Bay in 2005. Stefan Leuko, from the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, samples a pustular mat in Shark Bay.

Transcript:

This is exactly what I am looking for, this layering. I’ll just take a sample, just press it down on the edge to get all the layers down there. Just maybe here on the edge, Just pull it down, then pull it up again to get all the layers out of it.

So they are forming in layers, which is why these mats are like over there are greatly elevating, they seem to be building up, is that the layering? Can you in any way estimate how it takes these to develop?

I think it mostly depends on the environment there.

Of course.

But these ones look really old.

Yeah, these are the biggest algal mats that I know of in Shark Bay.
