Mushroom stromatolite

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (4.3 MB) recorded at Shark Bay in 2005. Stefan Leuko, from the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, looks at a mushroom stromatolite in Shark Bay.

Transcript:

Now we’ve really beautifully formed mushroom shaped stromatolites. Over here there’s one a little bit exposed already. This one here is rock solid and still an active growing layer as well as underneath. There are little bubbles are coming up. As well down here some squishy algae incised mat layer, something like that, which all contains mostly cyanobacteria, which all sediment down and build these amazing formations of rock.
