Evidence of early life

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (3.1 MB) recorded in the Pilbara in 2005. Abby Allwood, form the Australian Centre for Astrobiology shows what she believes to be evidence of early life in the Pilbara.

This big block here, which was discovered by chance, is one of the nicest examples of one of the stromatolite facies in the Strelley Pool Chert, in fact the nicest example of any early Archaean stromatolite that I know of. In side view here, you can look at, this is looking at the original layering. It's a little bit covered by weathering “patina” so we can't see that much, but we can see the original layering. Describing these pointed structures there are little bumps there, another point here and that's a cross section view of one of the stromatolites. And on the surface of the rock here, this top surface, this is a paleo surface, showing at one particular instant in time what the stromatolite looked like in the early Archaen earth or stromatolites. These little bumps I think were created by microorganisms as part of the biofilm or microbial mat that draped the sediment surface beneath the water and built these little structures.
