Difficulties of abiological explanation

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (8.3 MB) recorded in the Pilbara in 2005. Abby Allwood, from the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, discusses the difficulties of an abiological explanation for the stromatolites

Transcript:

We can see even in modern environments a dune or an underwater dune created by some currents and then superimposed on those you can get little interference ripples where currents from different directions at different days and different times of the year can develop, so that their little ridges are superimposed on the larger dune. But to produce something like this where you've got a large structure of a metre scale amplitude with bumps not ridges on top, you have to start invoking a really special precarious interaction of non biological processes to explain it and it just becomes unrealistic in my mind and then to maintain it through a thick stratigraphic section, so maintaining it for a long period of time, in exactly the right balance, it's not just natural, not abiologically natural, its just unheard of.
