Significance of the Pilbara

This is a transcript of a QuickTime movie (3.1 MB) recorded in the Pilbara in 2005. Abby Allwood, from the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, talks about the how a stromatolite is the result of biological and non-biological processes.

Transcript:

Every stromatolite is a product of non-biological and biological processes. So microbes mediate the deposition of sediment but so does current and wave activity and marine precipitation of minerals, a lot of other processes as well – so every stromatolite is a unique combination of each of those processes.
